Course info

Interest in sport and exercise in the UK has increased significantly, and those working in the industry require a diverse set of skills. This course will enable you to apply science and medicine to help athletes recover from injury and reach their physical peak and also aid the general population in maintaining healthy lifestyles. You will gain practical expertise that will allow you to assess, treat and support individuals from a variety of sporting disciplines. By understanding the process of an injury audit to identify risk factors, you will learn how to implement an evidence-based treatment plan that minimises the chance of reinjury. You will develop a comprehensive knowledge of pathophysiology, biomechanics and sports-specific clinical reasoning, allowing you to accurately evaluate and treat injuries. You will study rehabilitation strategies and return-to-play assessments, and you will explore the emergent field of prehabilitation, which aims to prevent injuries before they occur. As a student on this course, you will join a research-led academic community in the subject area of therapeutic and rehabilitation sciences. You'll gain practical skills that you can apply straight away, whether you work or volunteer in sports, or are looking for your first job in the field. Our Sports Volunteer Programme has excellent links with professional sporting clubs and fitness initiatives, and you'll have the chance to maximise your learning by taking up additional experience opportunities offered through this.

Modules (Year 1)
Epidemiology & Sports Trauma Management (20 credits) - Core

This module will incorporate your training and assessment in current sports trauma management techniques utilised by health professionals.

Neuromuscular Biomechanics (20 credits) - Core

Explore specific aspects of the structure and function of the neuromuscular system and their relationship with intrinsic and extrinsic factors in sport and exercise. Using advanced biomechanical techniques, this module deepens your understanding of the mechanical and neuromuscular functions that underpin injury prevention, rehabilitation and training strategies.

Evidence-Based Practice in Sports Physiology (20 credits) - Core

Examine the evidence supporting advanced exercise testing and prescription methods. You'll discuss technological advancements and their application to sports physiology with the aim to enhance elite performance. This module provides the theoretical knowledge and critical skills for you to evaluate and apply such methods within the field of sports physiology.

Sports Injury Management & Rehabilitation (20 credits) - Core

Combine theoretical and practical approaches which will help you to develop a comprehensive understanding of injury management. You'll explore key supporting knowledge, skills and evidence for rehabilitation strategies for athletic populations. Together, we'll critically review conservative and surgical treatment strategies, including specific controlled conditions. Finally, you'll consider and evaluate a holistic approach to progress recovery using a multidisciplinary team.

Clinical Decision Making in Sport (20 credits) - Core

Develop your clinical reasoning skills in the assessment of sports injuries, complex clinical presentations and pathophysiology. In this module, you'll enhance your skills in critical thinking, analysis and reflection. This understanding and application of current models of clinical reasoning enables you to develop your present and future practice.

Clinical Exercise Testing (20 credits) - Core

Gain a detailed and critical understanding of the application of cardiopulmonary exercise testing and exercise prescription in populations with cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions. This module focuses on the use of interpretative algorithms for the cardiopulmonary test data. You'll engage in a fairly intensive introduction to electrocardiography as well as survival statistics as they are used in clinical exercise physiology research.

Research in Professional Practice (60 credits) - Core

Develop your understanding of research with a focus on the systematic review process. You'll undertake an independent research project, facilitated by workshops delivered by your staff teaching team and assigned supervisor. Your achievement will be assessed through submission of a written report and supplementary files in the style of a journal article.
