About Postgraduate Economics

Economics is one of the most widely utilised applied sciences and is concerned with the creation, consumption and transfer of wealth. Economics sits at the confluence of a number of subject areas such as mathematics, business, information technology, psychology and sociology. It is a truly an interdisciplinary field, with wide ranging applications at all scales from the smallest local business to the largest and most connected global markets.

To gain entry onto one of the many PGDip courses in economics, you’ll need an upper second-class honours undergraduate degree in economics or a closely related field. Some programmes may consider applicants with degrees in business, finance or mathematics, since there is a considerable overlap in topics and a PGDip course has the advantage of taking less time to complete than an MSc. There are 15 economics PGDip courses available to study in the UK.

What to Expect

A PGDip in economics provides in-depth knowledge into the world of scarcity, supply and demand, data driven models and statistics. You’ll explore how societies allocate resources and make decisions, covering topics like microeconomics, macroeconomics and economic policy analysis. You’ll learn through a combination of lectures, class discussions and one-to-one tutorials; you can expect to do a decent amount of self-directed study. Assessment can come in the form of exams, coursework, essays and a final dissertation project on a subject of your choosing.

You’ll graduate with a versatile set of skills and a deeper understanding of the mechanisms through which global business and commerce operates. Graduates are well placed to take on a variety of career roles from investment banking, to consultancy, risk analysis and policymaking.
