Postgraduate Reviews of Courses at University of Essex

PhD Psychology

UNIVERSITY OF ESSEX

Nadia - February 2026

The University of Essex is an extremely supportive and inclusive environment to study in. The academic staff are knowledgeable, approachable and genuinely invested in student success. As both an undergraduate and now a PhD student, I have found the teaching quality to be excellent, with strong links between research and real-world application. The opportunities to engage in meaningful research, collaborate with international teams, and access specialist training have been invaluable to my development.

The campus itself has a welcoming and vibrant atmosphere, with excellent facilities including study spaces, libraries, and wellbeing support services. The location is also ideal, offering a strong campus community while still being close to Colchester town and transport links to London.

One of the strongest aspects of Essex is its commitment to diversity, inclusion, and student wellbeing. As a mature student balancing family, work, and study, I have felt particularly supported and encouraged throughout my academic journey.

Overall, the University of Essex provides an inspiring, supportive, and academically rigorous environment that genuinely prepares students for future careers and research opportunities. read full review

Not many places to heat up your own lunch or sit with friends that isn't in a restaurant.
But a lovely campus and decent priced coffee. read full review
There are not many universities that provide the course I’m on, so I really appreciate that Essex does. I do like the campus with all the canteens and cafes however, at times the food and drinks can be a bit pricey for a student.
I do love the library on the campus and the fact that it’s open 24/7.
There are a lot of events and societies at uni. Although I personally don’t have time to attend them, I do appreciate that they do exist.
The campus is located in a beautiful place and it’s great to catch some sun while sitting on the grass in the summer.
I wish that large overflow parking had markings for parking bays, as at the moment most of students park leaving large gaps between cars, which means that less cars can fit in. Also, I’d appreciate if students could park at uni for free.
The Business School building’s automatic AC works so it's strange that it’s always too hot or too cold.
When it comes to module readings, Talis list and the Module Outline don’t always match. I wish lecturers were more careful when checking that.

Despite my complaints, I would recommend Uni of Essex. The buildings might be old and the layout confusing but in the end it’s people that make this place so great! read full review
Worst: financial pressure, tuition fees, cost of living/housing
Best: my PhD project and research equipment available for it, student activities to unwind such as Arts and crafts etc read full review

Great variety of support for students, but lack of plant based food. read full review
Giving the place a ‘fresh coat of paint’ would go along way. So much of campus just looks dingy. Please repaint the faded stripes on the steps between Squares! Some of these features look like the place was abandoned years ago. read full review
The campus is very big and beautiful, with many nice spots to relax (like near the fountain) and to study (like the library and the post grad silent zone which is my favorite). The proffesors are helpful and their lectures interesting read full review

MSc Psychology

UNIVERSITY OF ESSEX

Kanza - January 2026

Best aspects:
One of the best parts of my university experience was the supportive learning environment and the opportunity to engage in both academic and extracurricular activities. The lecturers were approachable and encouraged critical thinking, which helped me grow academically and professionally. Being involved in societies and leadership roles allowed me to develop confidence, teamwork, and organisational skills while building meaningful connections with people from diverse backgrounds. The overall campus culture made it a motivating and enriching place to study.

Worst aspects / areas for improvement:
At times, communication between departments could be improved, particularly regarding administrative processes and timelines. Some support services were occasionally slow during peak periods, which could be stressful for students balancing multiple commitments. Improving coordination and streamlining communication would enhance the overall student experience and make support more accessible. read full review
My previous year was amazing. Staff were really supportive and access to multiple amenities on-campus. And this year the university has been really supportive as well read full review
