Postgraduate Reviews of Courses at University of Essex

MSc Mathematics

UNIVERSITY OF ESSEX

Abhirup - February 2026

Best aspects:
My university experience has been most rewarding because of the strong academic environment and access to a wide range of mathematical resources. The library facilities, availability of advanced textbooks, and exposure to diverse areas of mathematics have significantly supported my learning. I particularly value the emphasis on analytical thinking and the encouragement to explore concepts beyond standard coursework, which has helped me develop mathematical maturity and independent problem-solving skills. The multicultural academic community has also been a strength, allowing for the exchange of ideas, perspectives, and collaborative learning.
Areas for improvement:
One area that could be improved is the balance between theoretical instruction and practical or computational exposure, especially in subjects such as Differential Equations, Dynamical Systems, and Applied Analysis. Greater integration of lab-based sessions, visualisation tools, and hands-on problem solving would enhance conceptual understanding and better prepare students for research or industry pathways. Additionally, written examinations—particularly those contributing 10–20% of a module—could benefit from longer durations (around 1.5 to 2 hours) to allow sufficient time for rigorous reasoning in subjective questions. Alternatively, these assessments could be redesigned into structured short-answer or MCQ-based formats to better match the allotted time.
Overall, the university provides a strong academic foundation, and with increased emphasis on practical engagement and assessment design, it could offer an even more enriching learning experience for mathematics students. read full review

Best aspects

The strongest feature of the University of Essex is its academic focus and intellectual culture. Courses are research-led and encourage critical thinking rather than passive learning. In subjects such as politics, sociology, and economics, teaching quality is particularly strong, with lecturers who are active researchers and accessible outside class.

The campus-based structure is another advantage. Everything—accommodation, lecture halls, library, sports facilities, and social spaces—is within walking distance. This creates a close-knit community and makes daily life efficient. The international student population also adds significant value, exposing students to diverse perspectives and preparing them for global careers. Career support services and employability initiatives are well developed.

Worst aspects

Some campus buildings feel dated and would benefit from modernisation. Accommodation costs can be high relative to room quality. Transport links, particularly late-evening connections to London, are not always convenient. read full review
Student friendly places that we can eat can be increased, more options can be added on food read full review
The lecturers seem to actually care about us and marking feels fair too. You seem to get out what you put into it. The lectures and labs are interesting and the assignments feel like they are actually there to develop your skills and push you, they don’t feel pointless. If you reach out for support the staff are supportive and willing to try to accommodate you. However the amount of coursework can feel heavy when there’s many deadlines all around the same time. read full review

MA Criminology

Gracie - February 2026

I love the university as it has very friendly lecturers and teachers. I have autism so to have a teacher/lecturer that makes me feel like I can talk to them when I need to is very helpful for me. read full review
The atmosphere makes it fantastic and the people. The worst aspect is the price you pay and the little tuition you receive especially factoring in strikes. read full review

PhD Literature

Beautiful natural valley landscape with plenty of wildlife but ironic mixture of dated and over-modernised architecture. Teaching centres, business centre, hex, sports facilities, and Ivor Crewe buildings are good, but buildings around the squares are labyrinthian and worn.
Can be easy to get lost with not a lot of helpful mapping.

Amazing access to food and drink (especially SU Bar and Pizza, and Greenhouse Cafe) but PitStop (Buffalo Joe's) could need improved food quality.

Essentials shop on site is expensive but handy.

Easy access to supermarkets and shopping (Tesco's and City centre) via cheap and quick buses. Access to Wivenhoe also nice for a change of scenery.

Good accomodation and different price ranges.

Good opportunities for students to work at university whilst studying.

Good facilities for work-study-life balance, especially for Freshers, international, and local students. Thursday markets are brilliant and so are the on-site clubs.

Wide variety of courses available to fit almost all niches, careers, and research.

Nice to have a shop dedicated to souvenirs, memorabilia, and study equipment. read full review
