Medical sciences is a broad term which incorporates many fields of study that relate to medicine and healthcare. This can include biology, physiology, pathology, biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, genetics and many more. Medical scientists contribute to advancements in healthcare through research, diagnostics and the development of new medical treatments.
Medical sciences is a field which requires a lot of research and innovation, so it is unsurprising that there is a huge quantity and variety of medical sciences PhDs available in the UK, around 250 in total. When applying, you’ll need to demonstrate strong undergraduate qualifications, significant practical experience and submit a proposal for the PhD research project that will form the basis for your studies.
As a PhD student, you can expect to study for three to six years before completing your research. You’ll learn under the supervision of an academic tutor and will be assessed at several points throughout the programme through laboratory reports, presentations and coursework. The main focus of your work will be the production of a PhD dissertation, which is a long form written thesis of approximately 50,000-80,000 words, that represents the research you have undertaken during the course. For science-based subjects, this can take the form of an extended lab report. After submission, you’ll perform an oral assessment where you defend your dissertation in front of a panel of academics and once you’ve passed this, the course is complete.
Medical sciences PhD graduates represent the highest formal qualifications available in the field and are prepared for careers in academia, research institutions or the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, contributing to advancements in medical knowledge and healthcare.
