Microbiology and Infection MSc

UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM
Overall Rating

My time studying for an MSc in Microbiology and Infection at the University of Birmingham has been nothing short of exceptional. The university offers a perfect combination of academic rigour, a supportive community, and a vibrant lifestyle that I think is hard to beat anywhere else in the UK. The Campus & Location The campus is undoubtedly one of the university's best assets. It is absolutely beautiful, featuring a mix of historic redbrick architecture and modern glass buildings. The 'Green Heart' in the centre provides a massive, lush green space that really lifts the atmosphere and creates a sense of calm, even during busy term times. Logistically, the location is perfect. Having the University Station right on campus is a huge game-changer. You can be in the city centre (New Street) in just seven minutes, giving you immediate access to the Bullring for shopping or Digbeth for nightlife. You truly get the best of both worlds: a safe, campus-bubble feel during the day and big-city excitement whenever you want it. Academic Excellence & Facilities As a postgraduate science student, the facilities have blown me away. The Collaborative Teaching Laboratory (CTL) is state-of-the-art; working with such modern equipment makes the lab sessions engaging and prepares you well for a career in research. The teaching quality is equally impressive, lecturers are passionate experts in their fields (especially in areas like antimicrobial resistance), and they are always approachable and willing to offer guidance. Student Life & Support The Guild of Students does a fantastic job of bringing everyone together. With over 250 societies, there is something for everyone, and it makes finding friends incredibly easy. I’ve also been impressed by the practical support available. Worklink, the university’s internal recruitment agency, makes finding flexible part-time work on campus seamless, which is a massive help financially. Overall, Birmingham has provided me with a challenging degree, a great social life, and a supportive environment. I couldn't ask for more.

Accommodation

Location & Community Pritchatts Park was the perfect balance for me. The absolute best thing is the location. It is incredibly close to the Medical School, the Gisbert Kapp building (Engineering), and the main science block. While students on "The Vale" have a 20-minute trek, I could roll out of bed at 8:40 am and still make a 9 am lecture. It is also only a 5-minute walk to the University Train Station, which makes getting into the city centre for shopping or nights out effortlessly easy. The atmosphere is another huge plus. It feels like a proper village. It is much greener and calmer than Selly Oak, which makes it a great environment if you actually want to get work done. The Social Hub (Pritchatts House) has been recently refurbished and is a great spot to hang out, play pool, or study with friends. I lived in one of the Townhouses, which was modern, spacious, and felt more like a real home than a typical cramped dorm room. Also, you are very close to Harborne, which is a slightly nicer, more upscale area than Selly Oak. It has great cafes and shops (like M&S Food) if you want a break from the student bubble. It’s Quiet (Maybe too quiet?) If I have to pick a downside, it is that Pritchatts Park is definitely quieter than The Vale. If you are looking for the "classic" first-year experience where there are flat parties every night and constant noise, you might find it a bit too chilled out. It is definitely more for people who prefer a pub trip to a rave. Secondly, while the "Village" feel is nice, you are a bit further away from the main student supermarkets (Aldi/Sainsbury's) in Selly Oak. You have to be prepared for a 15-20 minute walk to do a big food shop, or just hop on the train to the city centre. If you are a science/medical student or just someone who values a modern, peaceful place to live over constant partying, Pritchatts Park is the best choice on campus.
