UNIVERSITY OF ESSEX
Overall Rating

Studying at the University of Essex feels like being exactly where I’m meant to be. From the moment I arrived on campus, surrounded by the peaceful beauty of Wivenhoe Park and the lake reflecting the trees, I felt a sense of calm and belonging. The campus isn’t just visually stunning; it creates an atmosphere where you can breathe, focus, and truly grow.

As someone who is neurodivergent, finding a university that understands and supports different ways of learning was incredibly important to me. Essex has gone above and beyond in providing accommodations that genuinely make a difference. Whether it’s tailored academic support, understanding lecturers, flexible learning adjustments, or access to helpful resources, I’ve felt seen rather than overlooked. The support hasn’t just made studying easier, it’s made learning empowering.

What truly makes Essex special, though, is the people. The community is warm, welcoming, and open-minded. I’ve met students and staff who are kind, patient, and genuinely invested in helping each other succeed. There’s a real culture of inclusion here, where differences are respected and celebrated.

For me, the University of Essex isn’t just a place to earn a degree. It’s a place where I can thrive academically, feel supported as a neurodivergent student, and enjoy the everyday beauty of campus life. It feels like home.

In terms of education itself, I think that staff need to remember that students come from all over the world and are exposed to different things and tools like software for example. SSo may spend sometime actually teaching the software for the first two lectures maybe especially when it comes to things like coding etc.

Accommodation

Living at University of Essex accommodation at The Quays has been such an important part of my university experience. From the moment I moved in, I felt a sense of independence while still feeling secure and supported.

The location itself is beautiful — being right by the water gives it such a calm atmosphere. Walking back in the evening and seeing the reflections on the river makes it feel peaceful, which is something I really value. As a neurodivergent student, having a space that feels quiet and grounding after a busy day of lectures is incredibly important. My room feels like a safe, personal environment where I can reset, focus on my work, and recharge.

The flats are modern, clean, and well-designed, with shared kitchen spaces that make socialising easy but not overwhelming. I’ve been lucky to live with friendly, respectful people, which has made the experience even better. There’s a good balance between having your own privacy and being part of a small community.

What I appreciate most is how comfortable and manageable everything feels — from the facilities to the support available if needed. Living at The Quays has given me structure, comfort, and a sense of belonging outside of my academic life. It’s more than just accommodation; it’s become my home while studying at Essex.
