PhD Biological Sciences

UNIVERSITY OF ESSEX
Overall Rating

Best: Supervision has been excellent, and the interdisciplinary setup lets me work across Life Sciences and Sociology without feeling boxed into one department. The Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme gives a strong research community and good training. Being in Colchester, close to the coast and estuaries, is ideal for fieldwork. There are also plenty of chances to get involved in how the university is run, including through student representative roles.

Worst: The ongoing restructure and staff cuts have put real pressure on departments, and you can feel it in admin support and in uncertainty about which courses will continue. Systems can be slow and clunky, and postgraduate students sometimes feel like an afterthought next to undergraduates.
